Pacific National is one of the most important railway companies in the freight transport in Australia . Pacific National has been part of a consortium of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), China Investment Corporation (CIC) and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCIMC) since 2016.

prehistory

In the course of the railway privatization since the 1990s, the state railway Australian National , which belonged to the Australian Confederation , also sold its freight transport division in 2002. This had been organized independently as the National Rail Corporation (NR) since 1992 . Before that, in 2001 it had been merged with the freight division of the State Rail Authority of New South Wales , the state railway of New South Wales . Buyer of the National Rail Corporation was the consortium of Toll Holdings and Patrick Corporation . The new company was named Pacific National .

history

In 2006, parent company Toll Holdings made a successful hostile takeover of Patrick Corporation, which, among other things, resulted in Pacific National being 100% owned by Toll Holdings . Toll Holdings was then restructured in 2007 into two independent companies, Toll Holdings and Asciano Limited . Pacific National fell to Asciano Limited . The result is the company from a joint venture of Patrick Corporation and Toll Holdings . After a reorganization of Toll Holdings, it was wholly owned by Asciano Limited. Pacific National has been part of a consortium of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), China Investment Corporation (CIC) and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCIMC) since 2016.

In 2004 Pacific National bought the company Freight Australia , which carried out the freight transport of the railroad in Victoria and which also owned a considerable part of the route network in Victoria . Pacific National also became a rail infrastructure contractor . The Australian antitrust authorities therefore imposed conditions on the purchase in order to ensure the competition and competitiveness of other providers in rail freight transport. This included the fact that Pacific National had to provide locomotives , freight wagons and train paths for its competitor Specialized Container Transport on the Trans-Australian Railroad .

Narrow lane traffic

In 2004 Pacific National bought the Australian Transport Network , which also operated the railroad in Tasmania .

2005 as a subsidiary of Pacific National Queensland established to the business on the kapspurige network of railways in Queensland to expand. This was recorded with container trains between Brisbane and Cairns . 2009 Advanced Pacific National Queensland their business in Queensland by also coal transports took over from the mines in the country to the ports on the coast, an area of business, which so far almost exclusively in the hands of Queensland Rail had lain.

Returns in government hands

In November 2006, Pacific National and the government of Victoria agreed to return the railway infrastructure in this state for just under A $ 134 million, as the route network could not be operated at a cost-covering level. A year later, Pacific National announced that it would largely cease grain traffic and other offers.

In 2005, Pacific National demanded a grant of A $ 100 million from the federal government of Australia and Tasmania , otherwise rail traffic in Tasmania would be suspended. The route network of Tasmania was leased from Pacific National at the time . As a result, the governments put together a rescue package worth A $ 120 million, which included, among other things, transferring responsibility for the railway infrastructure back to the Tasmanian state. Pacific National has since been the only rail operator on this network.
