The Journal of Bacteriology is a bi-weekly scientific journal published by the American Society for Microbiology in Washington, D.C. Established in 1916, the journal publishes original articles and reviews in all aspects of microbiology, including the biology of Arhcaea, which is a group of microorganisms distince from Bacteria. Most articles published in the Journal of Bacteriology were reviewed by an editor and at least 3 independnt anonymous reviewers before being accepted for publication. The journal has an impact factor of 4.146 according to the Institute for Scientific Information's 2004 Journal Citation Reports.

The current chief editor of the journal is Philip Matsumura, Ph.D., professor of microbiology at the University of Illinois Medical School, Chicago.
