The tongue is the large muscle on the floor of the mouth that manipulates food for chewing and swallowing.

The tongue is one of the organs of taste. Much of the surface of the tongue is covered in taste buds.

The tongue also assists in forming speech sounds. (give examples of sound formation using the tongue).

It also plays a major role in the tongue kiss and in oral sex.

A type of body modification is tongue splitting: cutting the tongue to make it forked. It may affect speech more or less, but reportedly can enhance the pleasure of kissing and one may be able to learn to move the forks of the tongue independently. It is not everywhere allowed and/or surgeons may refuse to do it. [1]
