Flipped Out Flippy

A green bear. He is character and furthermore a veteran of war. In each episode he is always wearing his Battle Dress Uniform with dog tags and green beret with checkered crest. There are evidence to suggest that he had fought in the Vietnam War, particularly his obsession in making booby traps inspired by the Viet Cong, as well as a flashback of his experience of being held captive by them (as seen in "Easy for You to Sleigh"). In addition, his attire seems to resemble to the U.S. Army Special Forces, which played a role during the Vietnam War.

Whenever he sees or hears something that reminds him of war (e.g. gunshot-like sounds or crackling campfires) his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder kicks in and he goes insane and kills everyone around him, believing that he is still in the war. When flipping out, several physical features about him change: his eyes turn a different color, usually green or yellow, his voice changes from high and cute to low and evil, and his teeth become pointed. In the Internet shorts, his teeth became crooked.

Flippy has many military weapons. He uses them regularly when killing the other characters, but for some reason, favors his large rambo-esqe bowie knife and sometimes uses grenades. Also he used a helicopter to try to kill Lumpy in "Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow". He also has a display of valuable armor and other war-related objects (with the exception of several Ancient Greek pottery kept in his house, suggesting his fascination for Ancient Greece, although the art on them suggested records of Alexander the Great) in his home as seen on "Easy For You To Sleigh". All these military features are likely to be reference to Rambo.

"Happy Trails Part 2" is the only episode which Flippy appears prominently in without him going berserk and killing everyone. Although he did kill Flaky, but that was out of anger for accidentally ruining their chances to escape but Sniffles, Lumpy and Handy helped kill her too.

Flippy rarely appears in the series most likely due to his repetitive trend in most of the episodes he appears in. Despite this, he is considered a fan favorite and possibly the most popular character in the series. In the internet shorts Flippy rarely died but he died in 2 of the 5 TV episodes where he appeared on.(Party Animal isn't sure)

Flippy, like Cuddles, Nutty and Lumpy has an account on the website MySpace where it mentions that he enjoys jogging, feeding birds, eating chocolate chip cookies, and sewing.

Flippy has killed all the characters at least once, except for Splendid, and possibly Cro-Marmot. He hasn't killed Pop & Cub intentionally (although this is debatable, since Flippy could had seen them and dealt with them by using a grenade, explaining the explosion that killed them). For some reason, whenever he flips out, he usually kills Toothy first such as in "Hide and Seek" and "Party Animal." He normally kills first a character with a tail (Cuddles, Toothy, Petunia, Mime, Lifty & Shifty).

Although Flippy can be the most cruel and dangerous character in HTF, his good side is considered to be one of the most social and kindest characters. This is proven in several of episodes where he is seen doing social activities with some of the other characters such as going to the movies and playing hide and seek. Basically, in most the episodes he is in shows him that he is friendly and social before "flipping-out."

Also, you can see that when he "flips-out", he does not remember it. (sometimes) In "Double Whammy" he finally realizes his mistakes and goes to Lumpy for answers. Twice was a failure but the third was hypnotism which ended in Lumpy thinking he's a chicken and Flippy fighting his flipped-out self. The episode itself is possibly a reference to Bruce Banner and his struggle with The Incredible Hulk. Nowadays, he is apparently learning how to control his evil side, since he can be surprised and be handed sharp objects without "flipping out".

Flippy often seen as a cannibal (like in "Party Animal", he drank Mime's blood, in "Easy For You to Sleigh" after he dissected Shifty with a Christmas tree cookie as a bowie knife, he bites it with Shifty's blood on it, and in "Flippin' Burgers" he sauced a fry in Cuddles blood). Though in one of the "Question Kenn" columns determine Flippy as an adult.

It has been announced that Flippy will be one of the three playable character in the XBOX 360 video game, Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm.

The Collect Them All section fact is that he enjoys knitting sweaters.

Trivia

  • At the end of the episode, "Party Animal", it is revealed that he's also allergic to peanuts like Flaky. That, or possibly venison, as it was a mixture of both peanuts and Mime he was drinking.
  • He appears to be a heavy sleeper, which is shown on "Easy For You to Sleigh." This may not be true, because there is no further evidence of this. Also, oddly enough, Flippy seemed quite wealthy for his character, as in addition to many antiques he owned, a home theatre system and large screen TV could be seen in his living room suggesting that he had a high rank in the army.
  • In the same episode, Ancient Greek pottery can be seen in Flippy's house, suggesting his fascination for Ancient Greece. Again, however, there is no further evidence to support this as well.
  • Flippy also appears to own a helicopter (possibly either a modified AH-1 HueyCobra gunship or UH-1 Huey helicopter, both of which played important roles in the Vietnam War), as seen in the episode "Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow", and seems to be able to fly it with skill. This is probably a further reference to Rambo, who was qualified as a helicopter pilot, as revealed in Rambo: First Blood Part II.
  • Most people think that he was the one who died in Kringle Feast and not Lifty or Shifty. It could be a palette swap error. Flippy did, however, had a subtle cameo appearance in that short, in one of the picture frames with him standing beside Lumpy and Flaky.
