'''Akshar or Akshara or Aksharam (अक्षर)''' in Sanskrit means letter or Alphabet. It also refers to the basic unit of sound, that is syllable. It derives its name from the fact that the first letter of this varnamala (alphabet) is अ ('a') and the last is क्ष ('ksha'). Combined, (अ + क्ष = अक्षर ) , one gets the term Akshar (Akshara / Aksharam) which is used to denote the all letters in entire varnamala, this includes both vowels and consonants.
