The Paradeplatz is a square at the Bahnhofstrasse in downtown Zürich. The Paradeplatz tram stop is served by lines 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 13.
Main characters
It is one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in Zürich and has become synonymous for wealth and Swiss Banks. Both major Swiss banks, UBS and Credit Suisse have their seats at the Paradeplatz. In the closest surroundings are several other notable banks.
Emil Castagnier<br />

The site of the square lay without the medieval city walls, and was incorporated into the town with the construction of the new ramparts in 1642. During the 17th century, it served as a lifestock market, known as Säumärt ("pig market"), renamed to Neumarkt "new market" in 1819 and finally to its current name following the construction of Bahnhofstrasse (1865). The hotel Baur en Ville on the eastern end of the square opened in 1838. The Paradeplatz was the scene of clashes between insurgents and cantonal troops during the 1839 Züriputsch.
Emil lost his parents in the blood purging of Palmacosta. An honest, somewhat naïve boy, Emil is a bit of a coward, and he does not like to make decisions. Emil lives in Luin at the start of the game. He is bullied for being the only child in the village to not be a devoted follower of Lloyd Irving.
The Sprüngli Confiserie at the southern end opened in 1859. The Credit Suisse (formerly Kreditanstalt) building at the northern end dates to 1873, the UBS (formerly Bankverein) building at the western end to 1897-1899.
The first horse-drawn trams circulated in 1882, electrified in 1896.

When he hears a monster's cry in the distance one day, he leaves his village to investigate and finds Marta, who shows some unknown familiarity with Emil. She reveals that she is being hunted and they agree to fight together against the assassins seeking to take the Ratatosk core Marta carries with her. When Emil learns that Lloyd Irving was responsible for his parents' deaths in the Purge of Blood, he decides to hunt him down to exact his revenge. It is soon revealed that he was summoned by Tenebrae, whose voice he had heard earlier. He makes a deal with Tenebrae and agrees to become a Knight of Ratatosk, thus enabling him to use Ratatosk's power during battle. Whenever he fights, his eyes turn red and his personality changes into that of a cruel fighter, causing some to see him as a monster.

Marta Lualdi<br />
de:Paradeplatz (Zürich)
Rie Kugimiya

Marta lost her mother during the Great Kharlan Tree's rampage. She tends to think along right-and-wrong lines. A bit of a tomboy, Marta is passionate about getting her way. On the left side of her forehead lies the Ratatosk Core, imprisoned in a dormant state. Emil becomes her guardian knight in order to protect her and the Ratatosk Core. She views him as effeminate, but believes he possesses a hidden strength. Marta wears a keychain that resembles Mieu, a character from Tales of the Abyss; Tokunaga, Anise's doll from the same game, is also visible on the back of her pouch. She is able to use support spells and some attack spells.

Marta is also the daughter of Brute. During the game, Marta develops feelings for Emil and falls deeply in love with him, and likewise Emil falls in love with her also. Depending on the player's actions, Marta either lives or dies at the end of the game. If Marta dies, Emil kills himself to revive Marta. The last cutscene will show Marta's letter to her family and friends, stating she committed suicide because she didn't want to live without Emil. If the player has made good choices, Marta will live. The end cutscene will show Marta and Emil hugging or possibly kissing.

Other playable characters
New characters
Richter Abend<br />
Kenji Hamada

Richter is a young man who first meets Emil on a journey to find the Ratatosk Core. Since he was oppressed as a half-elf child, he now hates those that oppress others; he also hates those who do not stand up for themselves. His extremely distrusting nature causes him to be harsh in order to see his goals met. He first encounters Emil while saving him from being bullied. Although the boy's timidity and passiveness irritate him, Richter resolves to teach him the basics of fighting. It is due to his inability to understand why many resign themselves to their downtrodden circumstances that he pushes Emil to become stronger through harsh means. Richter is also a member of the Vanguard, held in high esteem, and has been said to be the founder of the Vanguard combat group by Brute.

He was originally a researcher at Sybak, where he was researching the spirit of Ratatosk with his close friend Astel. Together, they were commissioned to look into Ratatosk's mana: however, due to a previous betrayal by Mithos' group, the spirit's trust had disappeared. It killed Astel in a rage; since then, Richter has held resentment towards Ratatosk.

Tenebrae<br/>
Hōchū Ōtsuka

Tenebrae is a Centurion Spirit of Ratatosk that is highly attuned to the forces of darkness. It appears before Emil, and the two agree to a contract that turns the boy into a Knight of Ratatosk. Although Tenebrae came from another world, it has since lost much of its power, so it is unable to return home. It is a very calm, composed, and serious being, though he has been known to make the occasional joke. It is very loyal to Marta, who carries the Ratatosk Core on her forehead. It appears to have a hand-like appendage on the end of its tail.

Aqua<br/>
Yōko Honda

Aqua is a Centurion Spirit of Ratatosk that is highly attuned to the forces of water. It, like Richter, seeks to obtain the Ratatosk Core, so it agrees to form a contract with him. Aqua subsequently guides Richter and aids him in battle.

Returning characters
These characters were playable in the previous game, Tales of Symphonia.

Lloyd Irving</br>
Katsuyuki Konishi

Lloyd is the protagonist of the original Tales of Symphonia. After reuniting the two worlds, he begins to search for the remaining Exspheres, to prevent them from creating further victims. Lloyd has been showered with both praise and hatred from the people of the world, some of whom rejoice at his actions, and some of whom condemn them. The Church of Martel proclaims that Lloyd was responsible for the Blood Purge of Palmacosta: this is neither confirmed nor denied by Lloyd himself. As a result, tensions between those who support Lloyd and those who oppose him have escalated quite rapidly. He has been framed by Decus.

</br>
Nana Mizuki

Colette is the heroine of the original Tales of Symphonia. She is sweet and generous, gladly giving her life for the world in the first game. She is also clumsy, as noted because she is always tripping and falling flat on her face. After the worlds were reunited, the Chosen system was abolished: as such, Colette is the final Chosen of Mana. She decides to perform the very last Ritual of the Chosen to aid the people of the world. The members of the Vanguard oppose her in this, and they target her with their attacks.

</br>
Ai Orikasa

Genis is Lloyd's close friend and Raine's younger brother. Although he is still small, he has grown considerably in the two years since Tales of Symphonia. He is extremely worried about Lloyd, so he and Raine split up to find him. Regarding Emil and Marta, he's happy to have friends close to his age, but on the other hand he feels sad about their hostility towards Lloyd.

</br>
Yumi Touma

Raine is Lloyd's teacher and Genis' older sister. She and her brother journey around the world to make it easier for half-elves to be accepted. Raine is worried about Lloyd's whereabouts, so she and Genis separate to track him down. She is a very calm, calculating woman who cares deeply for her students.

Zelos Wilder</br>
Masaya Onosaka

Zelos is one of the final Chosens of the Church of Martel. After the Chosen system was abolished, he pushed for major reformations within the Church. Zelos uses his good looks, popularity, and carefree personality to obtain valuable information. Although he appears to be a flirtatious, skirt-chasing young man, this is nothing but a mask: in reality, he is a calm, insightful person.
Like Colette he has also been shown to have achieved "angel" status in which he grows wings to perform his hi-ougi. His presence confirms that his death in the original Tales of Symphonia was not canonical.

</br>
Akio Ohtsuka

Regal was once a prisoner who was convicted of killing his lover, Alicia, after she was transformed into a monster. Regal removed his shackles shortly after Lloyd reunited Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. As the reinvigorated chairman of the Lezareno Company, Regal helps in Lloyd's hunt for Exspheres; he has also been instrumental in the reconstruction of the world. He is a true gentleman.

</br>
Akemi Okamura

Sheena is the successor to the Chief of Mizuho. She is also a summoner who can create pacts with the Summon Spirits of the world. Following the reunification of the worlds, Sheena has had many dealings with the King of Tethe'alla. She is a very bright, honest young woman.

Presea Combatir</br>
Houko Kuwashima

As part of an experiment, Presea spent sixteen years of her life in a robotic, unresponsive state as the parasites of a special Exsphere fed off of her body. Her body did not physically age during this time. After receiving a keycrest for her Exsphere in Tales of Symphonia, time began to flow for her again, and Presea rediscovered her emotions. In Dawn of the New World, she works with Regal in hopes of rebuilding her hometown of Ozette.

Antagonists
Alice<br/>
Mami Kingetsu

Alice is the leader of the Vanguard's army. Although she appears to be pure and innocent, she is actually very selfish and mean-spirited. With the aid of a special Exsphere-driven machine, she brainwashes monsters to do her bidding. In sharp contrast to Emil, Alice does not care for the creatures she fights with. She takes advantage of Decus' feelings for her and treats him as a slave. Alice is a half-elf from Hima and is thus able to use magic.

During her final battle Emil gains the upper-hand and tries to attack her. A weakened Decus takes the blow. Just before he dies he says he loves her. Alice, upon realizing that she loves him too, starts attacking Emil, but is struck down by Marta. She says that she is happy that she'll be with Decus again, then dies.

With certain hacks, it is possible to place Alice in the party, meaning it was intended for her to join the party, but the developers never got around to it, or her character data was present as a easter egg for those with hacking devices. The same is for Decus.

Decus<br/>
Akio Suyama

The leader of the Vanguard's espionage division, Decus is a simple man who cares little for the current conflict. Despite his noticable good looks, he has sworn to give his heart to Alice alone; he pursues her with single-minded determination, even going so far as to join the Vanguard to be near her. Although he is aware that Alice finds him repulsive, he is willing to follow her to the end of the world. Decus has been impersonating Lloyd, thus framing him for the Purge of Blood. In his last battle, Alice is about to be killed by Emil, but Decus takes the full blow of the attack. Just before he dies he says he loves her and Alice realizes that she loves him.

Brute<br/>
Rintarou Nishi

Brute is the leader of the Vanguard, whose ultimate goal is the emancipation of Sylvarant. After the reunification of the worlds, he begins to doubt the Church of Martel's legitimacy; shortly thereafter, he creates the Vanguard to overthrow it. He sends assassins to obtain Marta's Ratatosk Core, which he hopes will help in his liberation efforts.

Hawk<br/>
Yuuji Kishi

Hawk is a division commander of the Vanguard's army, and is therefore a subordinate of Alice and Decus. Although he dislikes his abusive superiors, he is too cowardly to stand up to them. He is later killed by Brute.

Other characters
* Astel was a former member of Sybak University, who supposedly looked and acted much like Emil. Having been used to being in a study environment since he was nine, he was known as a prodigy (despite being a half-elf at a time when the attitudes towards his race were less than friendly). Although he is dead by the time the story begins, he still has a large impact on the main story. Having been close friends with Richter as well as a fellow researcher, the two were sent to study Ratatosk; this eventually led to his death at Ratatosk's hands. His death was the starting point for the current strife, making up a fair amount of Richter's motivation and dislike of Ratatosk.

* Emil Castagnier was a boy who supposedly died in the blood purge of Palmacosta. His identity was stolen by Ratatosk in order for the latter to hide his natural shape, and his memories and a false personality were imprinted in it (leading to the Emil who acts as the protagonist in the story). Because he died in the blood purge, Ratatosk was unable to fully confirm his appearance, leading him to mimic Astel's appearance.

* Reisol Castagnier was Emil's father. He was killed in the blood purging of Palmacosta.

* Rana Castagnier was Emil's mother. When she was on the verge of death (and when the Ratatosk Core had woken in Emil), she urged him to go to her younger sister in Luin. In that state, when she was still able to see Emil, she felt that Emil's face was different from the Emil that she knew somehow. She is voiced by Yumi Hikita in Japanese.

* Alba is Emil's uncle. He scorns Emil for his timid nature and hatred of Lloyd, and is a harsh man who tends to speak ill of others. In reality, he is apprehensive of Emil, and they later reconcile. He is voiced by Shigeru Chiba in Japanese.

* Furol is Emil's aunt, and Rana's younger sister. Like Alba, she is quite prejudiced towards Emil, although they later reconcile. When the two first meet Emil upon his arrival in Luin, they do not recognise his face, and thus begin to harbour misgivings about him. She is voiced by Mami Horikoshi in Japanese.

* Paul is a boy from Iselia who admires Lloyd. He is voiced by Asami Sanada in Japanese.

* Seles Wilder is the younger half-sister of Zelos Wilder. She is voiced by Hiromi Konno in Japanese.

* Yuan was the leader of the Renegades, in the previous game. Since the defeat of Cruxis, Yuan has disbanded the Renegades and since moved onto other projects. He appears to be trying to keep Emil away from Ratatosk cores, and towards the end of the game, lends the protagonists the Rheairds, much like the previous game. He is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese.

* Kratos Aurion was a playable character in the previous game, but due to the events of the previous game he is no longer playable and acts as the game's narrator, as well as appearing in one cutscene, speaking to Yuan.
