Jacob Black is a fictional character in the books Twilight and, more involved, in New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. In the books, he is a Native American of the Quileute tribe who is a werewolf. He is very tall and loves to fix things, such as cars or motorcycles.

Role in the books

Twilight

He has a small role in this book. He introduces Bella Swan, the protagonist, to the idea that Edward Cullen is a vampire. According to Stephenie Meyer on her website, Jacob was originally just a device to tell Bella about the "Cold Ones". However, both she and her editor liked Jacob very much, which resulted in his much larger role in New Moon.

New Moon

Jacob has a much larger role in this book as a potential love interest to Bella. He comes into the story when Bella Swan comes to him to fix her two motorcycles, offering him one as compensation. He helps her voluntarily and his crush from the previous book develops into love. His werewolf ancestry and transformation into a werewolf occurs. He is noted for his ability to shift forms very quickly, apparently stemming from having werewolf blood on both sides of the family. Although he develops a romantic attraction for Bella - even working against orders from the pack's leader in order to let her know about his transformation - she does not feel the same way, though at one point she considers to give Jacob whatever was left of her heart from Edward shattering it. Bella describes him as her "Paris" - not her "Romeo" (that would be Edward Cullen), but someone who would make a more practical choice.

Template:Spoiler During a conversation, Bella's phone rings. When Jacob answers the phone, and thinking it to be Carlisle (the "father" to Edward), he tells him that Charlie (Bella's father) is at a funeral. In reality it is Edward, and thinking Bella had died, he immediately goes to Italy, to meet the Volturi. The Volturi are considered the 'royal' family to vampires, and their job is to make sure that the secret of vampires is kept - anyone who reveals the secret gets killed. Bella and Alice go to find and save Edward directly after that phone call, leaving Jacob hurt and angry. Jacob is hurt by Edward's return and by Bella's willingness to become a vampire.

Presumably, after the Cullens and Bella return to Forks, Jacob has become their enemy because of the treaty, making Bella his enemy as well because of her refusal to leave the vampires.

The book ends with Jacob reminding Edward, flanked by Bella, of thier treaty, in which the Cullens are not to bite a human. Bite, not kill. This means that if one of the Cullens turn Bella into a vampire, the treaty is broken, and the werewolves no longer have any reason not to attack them, leaving a possible plot for Eclipse
