The Brkini Hills is a hilly region in Slovenian Istria,[1] bordered on the north by the Reka River, on the southwest by the Materija Valley (Slovene: Matarsko podolje), on the northwest by the Karst Plateau ([Kras] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)), and on the southeast by the Jelšane Valley ([Jelšansko podolje] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)).[2] The Brkini region is devided among the municipalities of Hrpelje-Kozina, Pivka, Ilirska Bistrica, and Divača.[3]

The region is 25 kilometres (16 mi) long and 7 km (4.3 mi) wide, and covers an area of 180 square kilometres (69 sq mi).[2] Its central part is 700 to 800 metres (2,300 to 2,600 ft) high.[2] The centre of the region is the village of Pregarje.[3] The climate is mild, and the geological basis is flyschy, with a minor limestone part in the northeast.[3] The region is a link between the Mediterranean and the continental part of Slovenia.[4]

Brkini is an economically underdeveloped region,[3] with the main economic activity being fruit, in particular plum, farming.[2] Many people from Brkini go to work to the nearby town of Ilirska Bistrica, Podgrad, Hrpelje, and Kozina.[2] During the World War II, over one third of villages in Brkini were burnt down by the Italian and German occupying forces due to the Partisan activity in the area, which significantly affected the development of the region.[2] The population density is low, with people still leaving.[3]
