HMS Latona was an Apollo class cruiser of the British Royal Navy which served from 1890 to 1920.
History
Under Naval Defence Act, 1889, HMS Latona was laid down on August 22, 1889. Built by the Naval Construction and Armaments Co., it was launched on May 22, 1890. Completed in April 1891.
On June 26, 1897, it was presented at the Naval Review at Spithead in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee. On June 27, 1900, it received orders from Portsmouth for the vessel to be specially commissioned for a naval mobilization to take place on Tuesday, July 10. It was recommissioned at Chatham on June 1, 1908, then converted to Minelayer in 1910.
In mid-1913, it was active with the Minelayer Squadron of Second Fleet.[1] Between January 1–7, 1916 it laid mines between Cape Alanguli and Apostula Island [2]
Between December 13–14, 1916 officers from ship were involved in an incident with aircraft coming from Kum-Kale [3]
HMS Latona was paid off December 23, 1918 at Malta. By 1919, HMS Latona was sent for harbour duties. On December 22, 1920, the ship was sold.
