The '''HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht''' (''Hogeschool Utrecht'', HU) is a [[vocational university]] in the city of [[Utrecht (city)|Utrecht]] and one of the largest educational institutions in the [[Netherlands]]. It shares its main campus, the [[Uithof]], with the largest university of the Netherlands, [[Utrecht University]]. It also has buildings in [[Amersfoort]], 25 km from Utrecht.

HU emerged in 1995 from a merger of a number of colleges.<ref>http://www.hu.nl/OverDeHU/In%20het%20kort/Geschiedenis.aspx</ref>
The Hogeschool van Utrecht (HvU) was created in 1988 through a merger of several polytechnics schools in the city and province of Utrecht. On 1 September 2005, the HvU merged with the polytechnic school in Driebergen (De Horst). At the same time, the name was changed to Hogeschool Utrecht (HU) and the English (HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht) name was adopted.


==Employees==
The Uithof by government measures then merged nationwide nearly 80 HBO institutions to around 45 new colleges. In 1995, the merger of University College Utrecht, and in 2005 the name was changed to HU.
At the end of 2020, 3,552 employees were employed. Of these, 2,409 were teaching/research staff and 1,143 were support staff. In that year, 91% of the teaching staff had a master's degree and 13% had a PhD. At the end of 2020, 49 professors were working on practice-oriented research. In that year, 347 lecturers and other researchers were involved in practice-oriented research, while 118 employees conducted PhD research.

HU combines more traditional areas of study such as the Department for Medical Education with newer ones such as Communication Media Design.
There are 27,800 full-time Bachelor's students, 5,019 part-time and dual Bachelor's students, 2,801 Master's students and 565 association degree students (reference date: 31 December 2020). More than a fifth of the students at Hogeschool Utrecht are working professionals.

As of 2002, responsibility for accreditation lies with the Netherlands-Flemish Accreditation Organization (NVAO). All degree programmes offered by research universities and universities of applied sciences will be evaluated according to established criteria, and programmes that meet those criteria will be accredited. Besides the accreditation of degree programmes, the Netherlands has a system by which the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science recognizes higher education institutions by conferring on them the status of either funded (''bekostigd'') or approved (''aangewezen''). Funded indicates that the institution is financed by the government. Approved indicates that the institution does not receive funds from the government and has to rely on its own sources of funding.
