The Lapau is located in Bandar Seri Begawan, across the Royal Regalia Building and the Brunei History Centre. It is the ceremonial hall where the royal ceremonis of Brunei are traditionally held. It was also here, beneath the interior's exquisite golden-domed ceiling, that the present Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, was crowned on 1 August 1968. Adjoining the Lapau is the Dewan Majlis or Parliament House. Currently a new and bigger Dewan Majlis is being built not far from the Lapau and is scheduled to be completed by 2007. Official permission is required to enter the Lapau.
