Neodermaptera is a suborder of earwigs in the order Dermaptera. There are about 14 families and more than 2,000 described species in Neodermaptera. [1][2][3]
The former suborders Forficulina, Hemimerina, and Arixeniina have been reduced in rank to family and placed into the new suborder Neodermaptera. Neodermaptera now contains all the extant species of Dermaptera, while the extinct species make up the suborders Archidermaptera and Eodermaptera.[1][3]
Families
These 14 families belong to the suborder Neodermaptera:
- Anisolabididae
- Apachyidae Verhoeff, 1902
- Arixeniidae Jordan, 1909
- Carcinophoridae Hincks, 1954
- Chelisochidae Burr, 1907
- Diplatyidae Verhoeff, 1902
- Forficulidae Stephens, 1829
- Haplodiplatyidae Engel, 2017
- Hemimeridae Sharp, 1895
- Karschiellidae Verhoeff, 1902
- Labiduridae Verhoeff, 1902 (striped earwigs)
- Labiidae Burr, 1909
- Pygidicranidae Verhoeff, 1902
- Spongiphoridae (little earwigs)
