Tanah Abang is located in Central Jakarta. It hosts the biggest textile market in Southeast Asia. The market has been known to exist since 1735.

It is the only market in Indonesia that contributes 9% to the GDP. Strangely, no research centre can predict accurately the daily profit of the retailers. [1]

The market is the distributor of textiles to various Provinces of Indonesia.

Part of the market was destroyed by the fire in February 2003. The cause of fire remains as a controversial issue. Most people put the blame on overcrowding and political motive.
