Writing style and criticism

The Belize Times was established in 1956 after a split in the party lost it the support of the Belize Billboard, owned by Phillip Goldson.

The Belize Times is the official organ of the PUP and hence must be expected to have a pro-PUP agenda. Its feature articles contain information that is certainly inflammatory if not outright scandalous, and are generally critical of the opposing United Democratic Party, whether in or out of government. The Times has gotten into trouble on numerous occasions over articles bylined in its newspaper and is considered the least regarded of Belize's "Big Four" weeklies. Contrasted to this is its much softer treatment of the party that sponsors it; however, this has to be expected.

The Times has endured numerous nicknames from opponents directed at its writing style, including the "Belize Slimes" and the "Belize Grimes", but has never apologized for its style except where necessary.

2006 libel controversy

Attorney Lois Young Barrow has filed with the Supreme Court a libel suit against the Times over articles it printed in October 2006 attacking Barrow. Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh has issued an injunction, which the Times plans to appeal.
