The Geographical Journal is a peer-reviewed academic journal of the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers). It is a quarterly publication with issues in March, June, September and December of each year. The Geographical Journal publishes papers range across the entire subject of geography, with particular reference to public debates, policy-orientated agendas and notions of ‘relevance’. It also publishes shorter Commentary papers and Review Essays. Since 2001 The Geographical Journal has been published in collaboration with Wiley-Blackwell.

The Geographical Journal has been published since 1831, though it has had a number of names in this time, which are summarised below:

Year: 1893–present | Name: The Geographical Journal | Volume: 1 onwards

Year: 1879–1892 | Name: Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society and Monthly Record of Geography [Incorporating: Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society of London from 1879; and Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London from 1880] | Volume: 1-14

Year: 1855–1877/8 | Name: Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society of London | Volume: 1-22

Year: 1831–1880 | Name: Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London | Volume: 1-50

Prior to 2000 The Geographical Journal published Society news alongside articles and it continues to publish the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) AGM and Presidential address annually in the September issue. Thanks to its long history and relationship of exchanges, as well as its wide contemporary subscription base, the journal has a worldwide reputation and circulation.
