ISO 4

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ISO 4 ( Information and documentation - Rules for the abbreviation of title words and titles of publications ) is an international standard of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines a uniform system for the abbreviation of publications such as scientific journals . The first version was published in 1972; This was followed by revisions in 1984 and 1997 by the sub-committee SC 9 of the ISO / TC 46 “Information and Documentation” committee of ISO. The ISSN International Center was selected as the registration body . This maintains the "List of Title Word Abbreviations", which as of December 2014 contains more than 56,000 words and their abbreviations in 65 languages.

An important use of ISO 4 is to abbreviate the names of scientific journals in bibliographies . The New Journal of Physics is then referred to as New J. Phys. abbreviated.
