He studied lute in Japan and later in Europe with Eugen M. Dombois (Eugen Müller-Dombois) at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland. He has concertized widely as soloist and with chamber ensembles, e.g. with the group Alba Musica Kyo, which he formed.

Toyohiko Satoh has taught at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Holland.

In 2000 he became the president of LGS-Japan (Lute & Early Guitar Society of Japan) and LGS-Europe.
