A coaching tree is similar to a family tree except it shows the relationship and succession of coaches instead of family members. Coaching trees are common in the NFL and most coaches in the NFL can trace their "lineage" back to a certain head coach.

NFL Coaching Trees

In the current NFL nearly every coach can trace their roots back to three main prominent Head Coaches: Bill Walsh, Bill Parcells, and Marty Schottenheimer. As seen here 27 of the 32 current Head Coaches in the NFL can trace their coaching line back to these three coaches. In Bill Walsh's case he not only has several current Head Coaches that "descend" from him, but he also has a few former head coaches that are in his coaching tree.

Current NFL Coaches that are not on the above coaching trees:
Joe Gibbs (old school)
Wade Phillips (primarily was trained up by his father, Bum Phillips)
Mike Nolan (primarily a disciple of Dan Reeves)
Bobby Petrino (primarily coached college)
Lane Kiffin (came up through the college ranks)
