How to put sound on Wikipedia?

I have a song that I want to put on Wikipedia in article as a sample. But I don't know how to put it there, because of that copyright and source stuff. All I now is, my friend gave me the album that song is on and i ripped it onto my PC. Can I put it on Wikipedia as a sample, and if I can, how to do it? Hey, ZAPMUT. I'm very glad you didn't do this already, as you are correct, there are some very strict guidelines as to how this works. First of all, you're going to need to shorten the file. In order for us to use the song under a claim of fair use, you can only upload a clip that is 30 seconds long, or 10% of the song, whichever is shorter. So, if the song you have is 2:30, you can only upload a 15 second clip (150 seconds / 10 = 15 seconds). If you don't have an audio editor on your computer, don't worry - you can download Audacity, which will work even better, as it allows you to save the file in a working format. You'll have to save the file as a .ogg (Ogg Vorbis) file, because mp3's cannot be uploaded for various reasons. Once all that is done, go to Wikipedia:Upload (or click on "Upload file" in the sidebar) and click on "from somewhere else". Fill out the form, using this information. All of this information must be included or the file will be deleted.
  1. The name of the original song (under description)
  2. The name of the artist (under author)
  3. The name of the album from which this song came. (under description)
  4. A statement in the Permission section that states the following:
    1. The length of the clip, including where it starts and ends (i.e. 20 seconds long, from 1:23 to 1:43)
    2. There is no way this clip could be used to harm the author financially (this is mainly why we can only use a small clip)
    3. What article the clip is to be used in. The song must be used in at least one article, and must specify all articles it is to be used in. The song may never be used outside of the main article space.
    4. The song is intended to be used for an encyclopedic purpose.
Once all that is done, select "Music sample" from the drop-down menu below the summary box. Double-check every thing, and submit the form.
If you need help with any of that, please let me know. It is very complicated, and any mistakes will cause the file to be deleted. You may also want to look at WP:NFCC, our policy on how to deal with "non-free content" such as this. I hope this helps! Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:12, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
