Before moving into film, he was captivated for being one of London’s best known copywriter and commercials directors. He started off his career as a director at an advertisement agency called Coller Dickinson Pearce (CDP), where he directed his own scripts for television commercials in their basement. After his short lived partnership with David Puttnam for a photography agency, he decided to extend his horizons towards the white screen. He directed his first movie “....” as a full time director in 19bla.. He displayed intellectual ability in other areas which include producing, acting, and writing, but chose to rise in his career as a film director.

Soon after beginning directing motion pictures some of which were a great success and attracted the interests of many, his gift for directing was fully recognized in his hit movie “Midnight Express”, for which he earned the Best Director and Best Picture Oscar awards in 1978. Using the screenplay adopted by Oliver Stone, Parker was successful in drawing the attention to this biographical film and gained the liking of many film critics. Midnight Express is based on the true story of Bill Hayes, an American who is subjected to imprisonment by the Turkish police for trying to smuggle drugs into the US from Turkey, and is forced to escape from torture and inhumanly behaviour.
