Time-saving links II

Sometimes you may be editing an article and want to link a plural to its singular form. For example, to link "Fred Foo was famous for his study of puddles" to puddle, you could link it like so: puddles. However, you can save time instead by writing puddles.

This also works with adjectives (for example, Japanese), regular verbs in present or past tense (for example, dances or danced) and any other suffixes or prefixes.

However, this method does not work with spelling changes, for example: tryied does not work; you have to enter tried. It also does not work with possessives, so you may want to use Fred Foo's to get Fred Foo's. Using Fred Foo's will look like Fred Foo's, i.e. the possessive suffix unlinked, in plain text, and black instead of blue.

Note: if a redirect exists from puddles to puddle you don't actually need to do any piping, it's fine to link puddles too.

The only automatic way I know of is to use Vandalproof. VP automatically appends the message "A link to the edit I have reverted can be found here: link. Problem with image you deleted

Image:Soltyk.jpg: 12:55, 3 April 2006 Gurubrahma deleted "Image:Soltyk.jpg" (Off main page, C-uploaded). I'd assume you mean Commons uploaded? But if so, the name was probably changed and not corrected in related articles, like Kajetan Sołtyk. Could you go over your deletion and either fix the links or restore the image?--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 17:54, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am pretty sure it was a different image, unfortunately the site I took it from is now offline and I don't have the copy. I can't locate any copy via Google search (there is a thumbnail - in this search that's first image on the left, thrid row (from ipsb.tvp.pl)). And I am having trouble following the history of the image. The image history on en wiki shows you were the only contributor (23:16, 2 April 2006 . . Gurubrahma (C-uploaded PD-Art)) but I'd think that it was me who uploaded the image - and I tend to add sources, captions and categories (which the description of the image you deleted does not have, and which is likely why it was deleted from commons). I would also think I'd have uploaded it to Commons directly - but anyway I cannot find the mention of me uploading this image in my contributions (is the contrib entry deleted along with the image?). Anyway I am sure that this image had a source (site above) and was PD because of age (18th century).--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 18:30, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Update:I see that the image was temporarily moved from Commons, so the problem is on the Commons end. Unfortunately I am not a Commons admin and I can't review old image texts (this is not the first time that problem troubles me, would you happen to know where does one apply for Commons adminship?). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 18:32, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Update:I will leave a msg for Essjay at Commons.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 18:35, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A long and boring diary entry...

My friend,

Apologies for my lack of replies to your encouraging messages of late! Thank you for letting me know that people were concerned about some decisions of mine at AfD - I hadn't consciously noticed that I had pronounced upon two India-related articles in quick succession, and that doing so could look like bias. Hopefully I gave a good account of my reasoning on the talk page in question, and I'm pleased that an article that stresses the notability of the first one has usefully replaced the previous one that failed to assert any notability at all (or even manage any content!). I always worry how new editors will be put off by an empty article when a redlink would attract them instead.

I've been busy in real life of late, but have such a strong wikiaddiction that I still manage to put in an average of 3 hours a day! There's a lot of work on Image: that I do fitfully - the admin tools have been so very useful there!

Your influence has been profound in my real life as well: one of my hobbies (reflected now in my new WikiProject) is Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries on the Western Front of World War I. I live part of the time right on top of this area, so wandering off to a cemetery is somewhat easy to do. I now make a point of looking for - and looking after - graves from Undivided India, to add to my RAF duties (my father was in the RAF, so I have an affinity). Thanks to my friendship with, and respect of, you I have spent some time looking for, clearing rubbish from and photographing Indian WWI graves. I even attended a small service by the India memorial beside the Menin Gate a few months ago - nothing major, just a group of people lighting candles for peace. Nobody asked me to explain the presence of a Welsh white guy... fortunately... imagine the looks I would have got from the reply, "well, I have a wise internet friend I respect and that friend might like it if I stood here... but no, that friend is completely unaware that I'm here... please don't arrest me!" :o) I could have made it worse, of course, by saying "my mother's father's mother's father's father was from Sri Lanka!" - true (I've discovered) but an even more painfully poor explaination! :o)

So, in short, all is well with me and I hope all is well with you too. Thank you for keeping an eye on me and for your continuing help and advice which I value and respect. If you see people wondering about my decisions, please direct them to me: nothing I do is unrevertable and I'm happy to be told I'm wrong (although I'm happy to argue about how I'm right!).

DYK

Hi, I have just now made a nomination for DYK of an article unstubbed on 24/June. It seems rather inconspicuous, in the middle os a sea of old nominations, so I am pinging you to draw attention -- if you ever promote it, it must be in the next 24 hours at the latest. Guruji, what would this luckless drone know of bikinis n stuff? High fundas, quite out of my league. But sorry to trouble you, and I don't know why I pinged you at all today for such a small thing. I had missed out a DYK on History of measurement systems in India because the idea of a DYK nomination came to me only at the last minute (5th day) and it just slipped by despite a hasty nomination. Same way I was late this time also, and I just wanted to be certain that it would be noticed. Thanx for taking the trouble. I shall have another DYK coming up in a couple of days, as soon as I get a few hours free. I'm very close to inactive these days, as you can see. Regards, ImpuMozhi 05:36, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My dear Gurubrahma

My dear Gurubrahma, your kind message has meant so much to me, that I can hardly find the words to express myself. I have seen you around for a long time, and both the insight and the kindness that steam from you writings are simply inspiring. The mere fact that you've taken the time to express your generous ideas to me has enlightened my day, and they have made me think deeply about applying. Beyond my personal circumstances, I can assure you that you've already had deep influence in my upcoming decisions. But above everything, I see this as a great oportunity to finally get acquainted to a Wikipedian that I sincerely and wholeheartedly admire - and I value that more than anything else. Know that you'll always have a friend in me should you decide to honor me with your friendship as well. Someday, we'll have to talk more about the wisdom of your culture, if you don't mind to instruct a complete ignorant in these matters like I am. For now, I wish to send you my warmest gratitude and regards, and I hope this is but the beginning of a long way together. A great hug, Phædriel tell me - 00:33, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your interest in the above article. Is there anything you can do to help clarify this organization's notability? Several messages and suggestions have been left on the talk page but without favorable result. The article needs information and sources regarding the number of volunteers, clients, and amount of funding. Without this information, I think it's likely the article will be nominated for deletion, and your removal of the Prod tag will likely accelerate this process. Rklawton 14:04, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your response. I have no objection to your removing the tag. Before nominating this article for deletion, I would like to make sure no other information sources exist outside the English language. Unfortunately, I can't read any of the Indian languages. To that end, may I enlist your help or the help of your Indian administrator friends to make a quick search and confirm whether or not this is the case? Rklawton 14:58, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When this person is continually blocking other people's relevant edits and resisting the free flow of information on which this encyclopedia is based, it becomes an issue with the person. Castes and Tribes of the Punjab

Dear Sir, I am asking your opinion on this festering dispute that has developed between myself and Satbir Singh since the past few days.

The facts of the matter are like this:

I created a template called Castes and Tribes of the Punjab with a view to studying the caste and tribal groups that exist in what was the ancient Punjab region (Punjab (Pakistan), Punjab (India), Haryana and Himachal Pradesh). My intention, unlike any Ibbetsons, Todds or Cunninghams was to study these groups from a purely anthropological perspective sans any controversy so that people visiting this portal would get to know about the huge mosaic that my province (I am a Punjabi) is.

I started with a few groups. But soon enough the groups began to increase. For the sake of brevity, I grouped them under Categories. As the template evolved, I learnt not to name any category speculatively.

The final categories were:

 1. Brahmin groups.
 2. Dalit groups.
 3. Jat clans.
 4. Khatris and other groups.
 5. Rajput clans.
 6. Shaikhs and other groups.
 7. Tarkhans and other groups.
 8. Others (groups to which i could not attribute any specific status).

In the last (Others), I also included groups such as Kamboj, Khasa, Ahir and Gujjar. However, Satbir Singh separated them and bunched them under a new category called "Surviving Ancient Kshatriya Tribes".

Since that day, a revert war has been on between the two of us. According to Satbir, these groups such as the Ahirs (the ancient Abhiras), the Gujjars (Gurjaras), the Khas (the Khasas), the Kamboj (Kambojas) and Yadav (Yadavas) are ancient Kshatriya tribes mentioned in a number of ancient Sanskrit texts.

My own personal opinion is that all this is true. However, some points must be noted:

 1. The Varna System is a topic subject to a lot of controversy and dispute. I have been noticing this in recent weeks. Pages such as Khatri, Rajput, Kayastha and Bhumihar have been vandalised because many people don't agree with the Varna status of these groups.
 2. If the Ahirs, the Gujjars, the Khasaa, the Kambojas and the Yadavas are Kshatriya groups, then so are the Rajputs, Jats, Khatris, Tarkhans et al. I did not create a category entitled "Kshatriya groups" in the first place because I knew I was treading on soft ground. All the above mentioned castes claim Kshatriya status. But we all know, how disputable these claims are.
 3. The rigmarole that is the Varna System is known to us all. For example, the Jats, who in the Vedic and Mythological periods were workers should be placed in the Shudra Category under the Varna System. But many Jats clans consider themselves the equal and perhaps the superior of Rajputs as adhrents of Kshatriya Dharma. My own caste, the Khatris and related groups such as Aroras claim Kshatriya status. But we have seen on the Khatri page as to what became of that claim.
 4. Ahirs, Gujjars and Yadavs are considered to be OBCs in most Indian states inspite of their being the descendants of ancient Abhiras, Gurjaras and Yadus. There is a controversy raging on the Yadav page presently if I am not wrong, on the status of the caste.

Taking all these points into consideration and being aware of the fact that there are users (say Sanjay Mohan and Holywarrior, who have caused great disputes on various caste pages, I proposed categories such as "Kambojs and related groups" (Kamboj, Kamboja, Kamboh and Khasa) and "Gujjars and realted groups" (Ahirs, Gujjars, Dhangars and Bakarwals). But Satbir Singh and another user named Sze cavalry01 objected to it. They returned to "Ancient Kshatriya Tribes". I did a little compromise by making it "Ancient Warrior Tribes", which I later realised would also be POV. Therefore, I changed it to just "Ancient Tribes" - A completely unspeculative term.

However, Satbir Singh does not agree. He calls it a "gross suppression of known historical facts", "a crime against history" and "a political agenda" and has termed me a "Vandal". I have put forward my points. But both of us are yet to agree.

I have fighting a revert war with him for almost a week now. Have a look at the template's history page and Satbir Singh's talk page to get a complete idea of the whole fracas.

This fight has become downright silly. I surely don't expect myself to spend my time, money and energy on such a silly matter. And I am sure neither does the other party.

Therefore, I urge you to have a look at the whole matter. Whatever is you opinion would be agreeable to me.

I have, as of now, protected the page to prevent this major revert war. Please discuss changes and reach consensus on the template's talk page.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 04:51, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He seems to be a good learner and has already uploaded images, created redirects and added cats to articles within an hour of creating an account. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 06:25, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS - If you are online for some time can you keep an eye on him (Ronak123) for a while as I need to go through Ahmedabad and all articles associated with it. Nirav and I are preparing it for FAC today. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 06:27, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Helping new users is a nice feeling. Who knows - they may turn out to be the next Nichalp or Gurubrahma. Admin help is not any problem with so many people turning admins - Srikeit, Ganesh, Samir. And Ambuj and Anirudh will be joining the list soon. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 06:46, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Move request

Hi Guru, Can you please move back the Pokiri (Telugu film) to Pokiri. I explained my rationale in Talk:Pokiri. You can add a disambig link to tamil film on top of the page once it is moved. Thanks --Vyzasatya 05:59, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:M F Husain.jpg)

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:M F Husain.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Kevin 11:53, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the image from M F Husain as the article provided no content relating to the magazine, and therefore is not fair use. Kevin 12:40, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I agree with your rationale and I have deleted it under CSD G7. I uploaded most of the images in my early days here and most of them do not fit fair use rationale. Am busy in the real world now, but would get back to deleting my uploads when I get the time. --Gurubrahma 13:09, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Economy of India FAR

Hi

You look to be a contributor to this article, which is about to go into FARC unless we can get some input from economics people. A few of us, including me, have put a great effort into copy-editing and other improvements.

Can you assist? There are a number of unaddressed inline queries, and IMV the article needs more depth in a few places.

Hi, Gurubrahma! I've filed a request for arbitration which mentions or references you. Haukur 12:51, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind this. The case has been withdrawn by the ArbCom. --Nearly Headless Nick 16:31, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Would you be so kind as to go to the discussion about the Islamic Wikiproject Award? This has been a proposal that has lingered for donkey's yonks. I think the image is acceptable as a WP:PUA, but don't think the image is in line with most of the images at Wikipedia:Wikiproject awards. The design is not well supported, and right before I was going to archive the debate for lack of support, someone else moved it to the Wikiproject awards page.

The current discussion is going on here: Wikipedia:Barnstar_and_award_proposals/New_Proposals#Another_image. Your input is appreciated. --evrik 03:16, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
