The Álvaro Obregón dam (also called "El Gallinero" after a neighboring town) is a small dam in Mexico. It stands northwest of Dolores Hidalgo in Guanajuato in central Mexico and was built in 1946, according to other information in 1977. It is named after Álvaro Obregón (1880-1928), a general who was President of Mexico from 1920 to 1924.

Dam wall

The dam type gravity dam was for decades an alleged height of 260 m as one of the 10 highest dams in the world. It is still listed there in relevant lists (see web links). This is most likely due to a data error.

Reservoir

The reservoir behind the dam is 1.4 km² in size and holds up to 12.5 million m³; it is used for irrigation and water supply.

Others

A dam of the same name (also called Oviacic Dam) is located in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico.
