Álvaro Pais (civil servant)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Álvaro Pais (* 14th century ; † unknown) was a Portuguese court official in the 14th century. He served under the kings Dom Pedro I and Dom Fernando I .

Act

Pais belonged to the wealthy bourgeoisie of Lisbon and played an important role at the beginning of the revolution of 1383 and contributed significantly to the proclamation of John of Avis as King of Portugal. He influenced the revolt of the craft guilds after the murder of Count Andeiro , the lover of the regent Leonore Teles de Menezes . Possibly the death of the count goes back to his conspiracy.

His stepson, the legal scholar João das Regras , was the defender of the rights of John of Avis to the Portuguese throne during the vacancy 1383-1385.
