The Árbol de Piedra ( German: tree made of stone ) is a striking, approx. 7 meter high rock formation made of volcanic rock , which was created primarily by wind abrasion close to the ground . It is located in the Bolivian Siloli desert in the Potosí department in the Altiplano , a plateau between the western ( Cordillera Occidental ) and eastern Andes ( Cordillera Oriental ) at an altitude of 4575 meters. The mushroom rock, accompanied by a few smaller boulders, is located near the Salar de Uyuni in the Altiplano and is a tourist attraction in the Andean Fauna National Park "Eduardo Avaroa" . The next important places are Uyuni, a good 200 kilometers to the northeast, and about 100 km to the southwest lying Chilean calama . Around the Árbol de Piedra there are other striking rock formations in the immediate vicinity.
