history

The Älplibahn has its origins in the Second World War and at that time served as the MSB 105 military cable car to supply the border troops. Construction began in 1939, and the railway went into operation in 1941 for purely military purposes. From 1945 to 1973 it was used for tourism, but then stopped due to a lack of financial means for renovation work. A newly founded, cooperatively organized Älplibahnverein reopened the aerial tramway in 1982 . Voluntary teams ensure the operation of the cable car and the restaurant at the mountain station.
