history

On the occasion of the 50th German Medical which made German doctors Vereinsbund in memory of the fallen in World War I in the line of duty German doctors in 1926 in Eisenach on the Karlsplatz , a doctors monument erected. It was designed and created by Hugo Lederer (Berlin). The approximately 9-meter-high monument was built in shell limestone, the panels on the substructure were made of Silesian marble, the writing was made of bronze, the life-size figure of Aesculapius above was made of stone, but antique gold-plated. A base relief represented the symbol of medical care for a fallen comrade. The memorial bore the inscription: " DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI ". A zinc box was placed behind one of the relief panels, which contained a parchment with the handwritten names "of all German doctors who died in the First World War or who died as a result of the war". At the inauguration of the memorial, unique of its kind, on June 27, 1926, the medical profession and Eisenach's population took a large part.

The memorial was damaged in the air raids on downtown Eisenach in 1944/45. In 1949 it was restored in a simplified form. In 1950 the inscription on the monument was knocked out. The Eisenach municipal council decided to demolish the memorial. Doctors in Eisenach alerted West German colleagues, these the presidium of the German Medical Association in Bonn. This intervened with the GDR government. After Eisenach, the Ministry of the Interior then issued a notice that there was no reason to remove the monument for the time being. This suffered considerably from weathering and lack of care over the next few years . Its unsightly appearance caused the memorial to be "forgotten" even by the people of Eisenach. In 1988 the Working Group of Christian Doctors of the GDR attempted to reconstruct the monument, which "only partially succeeded".

The chief physician of the Deaconess Hospital Eisenach, in front of which the medical memorial stood, Dr. Gerhard Hasse (since the Peaceful Revolution civil rights activist and city council member in Eisenach at the same time ) suggested a thorough reconstruction of the memorial in the German medical committees - the Federal Medical Association and the State Medical Association of Thuringia. With the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection , corresponding calls for donations were made to the medical profession. The need for renovation was estimated at 150,000 to 200,000 DM. The reconstructed memorial was inaugurated again on the 100th German Medical Congress in Eisenach in 1997. The honorary president of the Doctors' Day was Dr. Hate. The original dedication on the memorial, which was removed in 1950, was replaced by "For the German doctors who fell in World War II". There was also an inscription: “The German medical profession dedicates this memorial to all doctors who have been victims of war, terror and tyranny in the course of their profession”. The deaconesses of the neighboring mother house in Eisenach have taken care of the monument in their personal care.
