The Karlsplatz is a central square in the city center of Eisenach in Thuringia .

location

Karlsplatz is located in the east of Eisenach's old town. It is part of the Eisenach old town area monument . The Löbersbach crossing the square was canalized in the second half of the 19th century and partially vaulted.

Development

The central element on Karlsplatz is a green area with the Luther monument . To the east, the square is bounded by the ensemble of buildings made up of the Nikolaikirche and Nikolaitor , the last remaining former town gate to Eisenach. To the north of the Nikolaikirche is the mother house of the Diakonissenhausstiftung with the medical monument . The north side of the square is characterized by representative city buildings, including the Deutsche Bank building and the Hotel Thüringer Hof . There was a gas station in front of the bank building from the 20th century until the 1970s. Alexanderstrasse and Nikolaistrasse branch off to the north from Karlsplatz. In the north-west corner of the listed city pharmacy there is access to Karlsstrasse. To the west, the square turns into Johannisstrasse. The south side is continuously built with residential and commercial buildings, some of which are listed. There is also a listed staircase leading to the Wartburgallee and the city park .

The new building at Karlsplatz 2-4, completed in 2007, is a specialty. The former Hotel Tannhäuser was located at its location until 1989 , but was demolished at short notice in the summer of 1989. The resulting vacant lot with the stairs that remained on the side wall of the neighboring building shaped the image of the square for more than 15 years and went down in town history as the Tannhauser gap .

history

Today's Karlsplatz is one of three historical market settlements in today's urban area. Located directly at the Nikolaitor, it has been a central traffic junction in the old town since the Middle Ages.

From 1897 the Eisenach tram used Karlsplatz, coming from Eisenach train station in the direction of Südviertel ; with the completion of further tram lines through the Karlsstraße to the market square and further in 1909 the Karlsplatz developed into the central tram junction in Eisenach.

The square was given its current design in the 1950s. During this redesign, a more spacious green area with benches and flower beds around the Luther monument and planted the current trees. On the edge of the green area, near the entrance to Karlsstraße, a technical building with a kiosk and a bus shelter for the tram was built, which was removed again in the early 1990s. During the time of the GDR, the square was renamed the Platz der Deutsch-Sowjetischen Freundes , and in 1990 it got its previous name back.

In 1975 the tram service was stopped and the central stop on the south side of the square was redesigned into a flower bed. In front of the Nikolaitor, the last relic of the Eisenach tram's track is the former triangle of the former tram depot.

Planned redesign

A draft for the redesign of Karlsplatz has existed since 2008. The draft plan is based both on the historical development of the square and on ideas from a workshop on Karlsplatz in 2004. The concept was presented by the “Karlsplatz” working group, which was founded in 2005 and, as an independent citizens' committee, was supposed to accompany the planning for the redesign of Karlsplatz. The financing of the redesign is currently not secured due to the tight budget situation of the city of Eisenach, so that it is not foreseeable when the redesign of the square will take place.
