Ælfric Bata

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ælfric Bata , also Latinized as Eluricus Bate , was a Benedictine monk in the early 11th century.

Ælfric Bata was a student of the better known Ælfric Grammaticus . Further biographical details, as well as the meaning of his nickname Bata (possibly from Old English: bāt = "boat", batt = "hit, stick" or batian = "get better, heal") are unknown. He was the author of two colloquia in Latin and a revision of the Colloquia of the Ælfric Grammaticus. The Colloquia and Colloquia difficiliora were reading books for Latin lessons and describe in dialogue form the life in the monastery school and the everyday life of the "simple man" of his time. Ælfric Batas Colloquia and Colloquia difficiliora were based on writings by Aldhelm von Sherborne .

Ælfric Bata probably lived in Winchester or Canterbury Abbey. He died between 1010 and 1020.
