Étienne Aymonier

Étienne Aymonier (born January 2, 1844 in Le Chatelard , Savoy , † January 21, 1929 in Paris ) was a French official in the colonial administration of Cambodia . He traveled widely in Southeast Asia , including a. also in Siam , today's Thailand, and recorded monuments and inscriptions. Later he was the first director of the French colonial school École Coloniale .

Aymonier published his results in 1900 ( Le Cambodge , 3 volumes). They contain a list of the monuments of all known archaeological sites at the time, together with maps and plans. Many of the inscriptions were translated and commented on by him, as he also worked as an epigrapher . Aymonier was also interested in ethnographic topics, some of his illustrations are important testimonies to rural life in Cambodia in the late 19th century.
