The Ídolo de Zonzamas ( German  "Idol von Zonzamas" ) is a statuette that was found on the island of Lanzarote and is attributed to the Majos , the native inhabitants of the island. It is not clear whether this is really an idol , i.e. a religiously determined work of art.

sculpture

The Ídolo de Zonzamas is a sculpture of a person sitting on heels. The outstretched arms lie on the lower legs. The figure was made from gray basalt. It has a trapezoidal base of 9.5 cm in length and an average width of 5.2 cm. The height is 13 cm. She is referred to by historians as genderless or female.

Location

The Ídolo de Zonzamas was found in 1981 during excavations in the Zona Arqueológica de Zonzamas . The settlement of Zonzamas is considered to be one of the most important archaeological sites in the Canary Islands. It is believed that it was the residence of Guardafías , the last ruler of the Majos, in 1402 . The place was continuously inhabited until the beginning of the 18th century and was only abandoned in connection with the volcanic eruptions that began in 1730.
