Ínsua (island)

Forte da Ínsua

The Ínsua is an island in Portugal at the mouth of the Minho in the Atlantic Ocean .

It is about 350 meters from the mainland and belongs to the municipality of União das Freguesias de Moledo e Cristelo in the Caminha district . It is made of granite . It extends from north to south about 400 meters.

Several times in history attempts have been made to connect the island to the mainland. The first attempt is documented in 1575. The project was repeated in 1582, 1629, 1708, 1895 and 1947.

Most of the island is occupied by the fortification of Forte da Ínsua . There is a fresh water well inside the fortress.
