The island of Île Saint-Joseph is located off the coast of French Guiana in South America and belongs to the Îles du Salut group . The now uninhabited island has been used as a prison and insane asylum since the mid-19th century . Due to the high mortality of the inmates exiled here, the island was nicknamed the Island of Tranquility or Dry Guillotine .
Today there is an outpost of the Foreign Legion on the island . On Saint-Joseph, tourists can visit the overgrown ruins of the prison buildings and the prison administration cemetery of the Iles du Salut.
