The Île d'If is a small uninhabited island in the Mediterranean Sea , about 1.5 kilometers west of the French coastal city of Marseille .

The rocky island belongs to the group of Frioul Islands , is around 280 meters long and up to 80 meters wide. It is dominated by the Château d'If , a fortress from the 16th century.

The island and the prison there became known primarily through the novel " The Count of Monte Christo " by the writer Alexandre Dumas .
