Öğrenci Seçme Sınavı

Student Selection and Placement System , abbreviated OLS , the university entrance exam in Turkey , which has to be removed to a place at one of the 131 universities in Turkey to obtain.

In 2005, 1.73 million candidates applied for 607,994 study places (2000: 1.41 million applicants for 414,647 study places).

The examination is organized by a department of the Turkish University Council (YÖK) , the ÖSYM ( "Öğrenci Seçme Yerleştirme Merkezi" ), roughly comparable to the German Foundation for University Admissions , formerly the central office for the allocation of study places.

The examination was introduced in the 1960s, before the universities selected their students according to their own criteria.

ÖSS takes place every year in mid-June. Multiple-choice questions about school material in various subjects must be answered within 195 minutes .

In preparation, many students attend a “dershane” (private cramming school ).
