Economists

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The economists were a sub-group in the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Russia (RSDLP), which primarily emphasized economic and trade union goals.

Since the 1890s , revisionist currents have emerged alongside the communists , such as those represented by Lenin or Plekhanov . In addition to a group known as Legal Marxists , this also included the economists.

The economists came from trade union practice and advocated reforms based on the existing social order. To do this, they rely on unions and, if necessary, on strikes. They were of the opinion that the Russian proletariat was not yet mature enough to wage political struggles independently and that it should therefore limit itself to economic struggles.

The group thus met the opposition of the orthodox Marxists. “If this were true,” wrote Lenin, “it would be like a death sentence for the whole of social democracy , because that means that the mass of the Russian worker is not yet ripe for social democracy.” The conception of the economists was directed against the program (developed by the editors of the Iskra newspaper, which has been published since 1900, before the split of the RSDLP into Bolsheviks and Mensheviks ) of building a political workers' party that was to fight for both economic and political demands.
