Austrian Hockey Bundesliga (field, women)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian women's field hockey Bundesliga is the top division in Austrian field hockey. The organization of the league is the responsibility of the Austrian Hockey Association (ÖHV). The champions and a second club qualify as Austrian representatives for the European Cup of the following season. The league has been played with interruptions since 1927. Normally it is played from September to June with an interruption between November and March when indoor hockey is played.

The league consists of seven teams. Since the women's Bundesliga is most of the time the only championship league in Austrian women's field hockey, the number of participants varies from year to year. The seven teams first play a regular round, each consisting of two games against the other teams. The first four qualify for the "Final Four". The first and fourth as well as the second and third of the basic round each play a semi-finals. The winners play for the championship title in the final. Third place is not played out. Instead, it is sent directly to the best placed in the basic round who did not reach the final. A relegation will not take place due to the lack of a lower league. The basic round winner qualifies as the second-ranked representative for the European competition. In the event that the regular season also wins the championship, the regular runner-up qualifies for the European Cup.
