Alternating with the ensemble competition “Music in Small Groups” , the Austrian Youth Brass Musicians organize the Austrian Youth Brass Orchestra Competition around the Austrian National Day . The Austrian youth wind orchestra competitions are a strong incentive for many music associations to promote youth orchestral work.

In 2003, the Austrian Youth Wind Orchestra Competition, which took place at four locations in Austria, celebrated its premiere and was immediately accepted with great interest: 74 youth wind orchestras with more than 2,600 musicians between the ages of 7 and 18 took part in the competition. In 2005 there were already 118 youth wind orchestras with over 4500 musicians. In 2007, the federal competition was preceded by state competitions in the federal states for the first time. A total of 10,000 young people in 200 orchestras entered this competition. In 2009 these numbers were achieved again.

Participating orchestras

Participation in the national competition requires prior qualification in a state competition. The respective regional association decides autonomously on the sending of the participating orchestras. The final number of orchestras per regional association depends on the number of participating orchestras in the national competitions.

Young wind orchestras with nine or more members are permitted. The following types of youth wind orchestras are eligible:

  1. the club's own young band
  2. Cross-club youth and youth selection wind orchestras
  3. Music school and school wind orchestras
  4. Special groups / selected orchestras

Ages

The participating young wind orchestras can compete in six different levels: Aj, BJ, CJ, DJ, EJ and SJ, whereby the classification depends on the average age of the participating musicians.

The evaluation of the compulsory and the self-chosen piece is based on the following criteria:

  6. Tempo and agogic
  7. Dynamic differentiation
  8. Sound equalization and register balance
  9. Interpretation and sense of style
  10. Artistic-musical overall impression
