Östra Vemmenhögsten

The Östra Vemmenhögsten (formerly Dybäcksten ; rundata DR 268) is a rune stone , which in its original place on the land of Castle Dybäck near the Herremannsbron , a bridge in the east of Östra Vemmenhög in Skivarp in Skåne in Sweden stands.

The stone was mentioned as early as 1591 in Anders Sørensen Vedels (1542–1616) Hundertliederbuch . An attempt at interpretation from 1598 leads to the belief that the stone came from the time of King Snös (around 600 AD).

The rune stone was examined and described by Jon Skonvig (1600–1664) in 1627 . Ole Worm (1588–1654) also reports on him in his Monumenta Danica . Johan Göransson (1712–1769) described the stone in his 1750 book Bautil .

The granite rune stone is about 2.0 m high, 1.5 m at the base and 0.75 m wide and 0.55 m thick at the top. The runes on the north side are about 17.0 cm high and stand vertically in a simple serpentine band. The stone was stuck in the ground, some runes were under the surface.

The text reads: "Broder built this stone for his brother Busa, [he was] a mighty man".

In 1966 the stone was stripped of lichen and some cracks were sealed with fine-grain cement mortar. In addition, it was raised by 1.0 m and the runes were colored in. In 1977 the runes were repainted and the stone examined.

Legend

When Ludvig Wimmer (1839–1920) examined the stone in 1876, he heard a legend about it: Two brothers freed a virgin. However, she could not decide which of the two to marry, and suggested a decision through a stile corridor . This ended with the death of the two fighters. One of the two died at the church of Östra Vemmenhög , the other at the Herremannsbron. The virgin built the grave mound at the church and the rune stone in memory. However, the legend does not match the inscription on the stone.
