For the annual balance to be drawn up by the hospital, overdue payments are regarded as unfinished services . The expected treatment fees from the health insurance companies for these patients must be taken into account accordingly, which is only possible approximately in the case of revenues that do not cover costs .

Since the introduction of the billing according to case flat rates ( Diagnosis Related Groups or DRG) in 2003 , we have had to pay special attention to the new coding guidelines and mostly also coding tables for diagnoses ( ICD ) and interventions ( OPS ). The assignment of a patient to a certain flat rate per case can change suddenly on January 1st. Since both the determined flat rate per case and the coding of certain diagnoses can have far-reaching consequences, the procedure for retirees must often be specified separately with regard to such consequences. This can, for example, relate to regulations for merging two treatments or the need for and remuneration of separate documentation procedures as part of external quality assurance .
