from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Þorstein's þáttr sögufróða is a short Old Icelandic story ( þáttr ). It is part of the royal saga about Haraldr III. Sigurdarson . In Old Norse research, it was often used as evidence for the existence of the oral saga transmission ( free proposition theory ).

action

The main character Þorsteinn is at the court of the Norwegian King Haraldr III. Sigurðarson recorded and entertained the king and his entourage by telling them sagas. As the Yule festival approaches, Þorsteinn becomes restless because he only has one saga left to tell. This saga is about King Haraldr's journey to Byzantium. Haraldr wants to hear this story about the holiday season and is very pleased afterwards. When Haraldr Þorsteinn asks why he knew this story so well, he replied that he went to the Althing in Iceland every summer and that he heard this story from Halldór Snorrason.
