Česká unie židovské mládeže (Czech Union of Jewish Youth; abbreviated ČUŽM) is the oldest Jewish youth organization in the Czech Republic and is based in Prague . It is an associated organization of the Federace židovských obcí v České republice (Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic).

history

The ČUŽM was established on November 10, 1990 at a seminar in Štíťany as part of the Czechoslovak Union of Jewish Youth (ČSUŽM).

From the very beginning, the Union has been committed to the renewal of many aspects of Jewish life in Czechoslovakia, which in the past were destroyed or significantly restricted by the regime that ruled until 1989; this included the promotion of Jewish religious and social life. A new upswing in the association's activity came around 1998/1999 through Rabbi Yaron Ben David, who saw the union as an important part of the entire Jewish community. Since then, board elections have been held regularly, seminars also organized at international level, branches established in other cities, etc.

activity

The ČUŽM is committed to the goals of pre-war organizations such as Makkabi or Hashomer Hatzair , its requirements for members are relatively liberal (Jewish origin of a grandparent is sufficient, strict faith is not required), its goal is to promote Jewish culture and traditions. One of the preferred activities of the ČUŽM is helping with the restoration of synagogues that were destroyed and devastated during and after the war and in the past 45 years . She also takes care of the restoration and maintenance of Jewish cemeteries. Its members organize protest marches against right-wing extremist and neo-Nazi tendencies and gatherings.

Members have made an outstanding contribution to the stumbling block campaign by the West German artist Gunter Demnig in the Czech Republic. They got this idea (independently and at the same time with students from the College of Construction in Kolín ) in 2008 and have been involved in the laying of the building ever since. They also carried out a commemorative campaign - the annual readings of the names of the Holocaust victims on the day of Yom HaScho'a in the Czech Republic.
