Czechoslovak National Committee (1939)

The Czechoslovak National Committee , in Czech Československý národní výbor , was a Czechoslovak organization that was to represent the Czech and Slovak people abroad after the occupation of the country by the German armed forces and to promote their liberation. The committee was the central organ of the Czechoslovak resistance and a kind of substitute government.

The committee, about the establishment of which some representatives of Czechoslovakia, including Edvard Beneš , agreed in October 1939, was founded in Paris and recognized by the French government on November 14th . The British cabinet followed suit on December 20, declaring it “suitable to represent the Czechoslovak people”. The committee signed a number of agreements, including an agreement on October 2, 1939 on the establishment of army units in France and on the jurisdiction of the Czechoslovakian ones Army jurisdiction for the soldiers.

Due to differences of opinion about the policy of the committee, the ( Slovak National Council ) ( Slovenská národní rada ) split off on November 22, 1939 and renamed the Czecho-Slovak National Council ( Česko-slovenská národní rada ) on January 28, 1940 . The driving force behind it was the politician Milan Hodža .

The chairmanship of the committee consisted of the following people: President Edvard Beneš, his deputy Jan Šrámek , General Sergěj Ingr , Štefan Osuský , Eduard Outrata , Hubert Ripka , Juraj Slávik and General Rudolf Viest .

After France's military collapse in June 1940, the National Committee was reorganized into the Czechoslovak government in exile , which went to London with the Czechoslovak army units . On July 23, 1940, it was recognized by Great Britain as the "Provisional Government of Czechoslovakia".
