Łowiczer Scherenschnitte (Polish: Wycinanki łowickie ) are Polish cut images made of paper . They are made in the vicinity of the Polish city of Łowicz , which is west of Warsaw .

history

Originally, were paper cuts as a template for ornaments of confectionery pastry used. Using a collage technique, the scenes are cut out of monochrome paper with scissors or a knife and, in some cases, glued onto white cardboard to form multi-layered cross-sectional images. Mostly scenes from rural life are depicted in the traditional costumes of Łowicz . Farmers and domestic animals such as chickens, pigs, cows and sheep serve as motifs. The finer the paper cuts are made, the higher the price to be achieved for them.

Folk handicrafts are mainly cultivated as a custom in the winter months. The products are sold to tourists in nearby Warsaw. The artists mostly remain anonymous; but some works are marked or even signed.
