The Ōsaka Tenman-gū ( Japanese 大阪 天 満 宮 , also Tenjin-san ) is a Shintō shrine dedicated to the Kami Tenjin in the Kita district of the city of Osaka in Japan .

It was built in 949 on the orders of Murakami -tennō, supposedly on the stretch of beach where Jimmu-tennō is said to have landed. Another legend says that Murakami-tennō had the shrine built there because a strange light appeared to him at this point and Sugawara no Michizane is said to have stopped there on his way to Kyūshū . One of Michizane's companions at the time is said to have been the direct ancestor of the priestly family at the shrine.

In honden , Michizane becomes a Tenjin together with the Kami Saruda-hiko, Ame-no-tajikara-wo, Hiru-ko as Ebisu (also in the adjoining shrine Hiru-ko-sha ) and Nomi-no-sukune (one of the ancestors of Michizane and ancestor the Sugawara) venerated. The current construction of the main building dates from 1845.

Tenjin Matsuri

Probably the most important festival of Osaka Tenman-gū is Tenjin-matsuri on July 24th and 25th every year. The origins are said to go back to the year 951. It has been one of the biggest festivals in Japan since the 16th century . Several thousand people actively take part in the processions with the Mikoshi through the city, processions in historical costumes, dances, bunraku performances , the boat trip over the Dojima and other ceremonies.

The festival is also celebrated by other Tenman-gū in Japan, but the one in Ōsaka Tenman-gū is the most famous.
