Şerafettin Kaya

Şerafettin Kaya (* 1929 in Varto , Muş , Turkey ) is a Kurdish lawyer , teacher and human rights activist .

Life

Kaya worked as a school teacher in the Turkish province of Muş and in Ankara and, after studying law, founded a law office in Diyarbakır . From 1971 to 1974 he defended oppositional Kurds in the Kurdish city and in 1976 was one of the founding members of the left-wing organization Rizgari .

As chairman of the Muş Bar Association, he was also a delegate of the Turkish Bar Association in Ankara. After several stays in prison, he managed to escape to Germany in 1982, where he published his experiences as a book. Kaya appears as an expert in asylum procedures and processes in Germany. He advocates mother tongue teaching in the Kurdish language .
