Sargija

Šargija , also Shargija , is a long-necked lute that is played in the folk music of the Balkan states of Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia and Serbia .

The plucked instrument is used to accompany singing, in conjunction with a violin and to accompany the Kolo personal dance. The Šargija originally had three individual strings, there are also double-choir instruments with six or seven strings, if a choir consists of three strings. The strings are all struck at the same time (English strumming ). A common mood is c – g – d.

Related to the Šargija is the Sharki in Albania , the Tambura in Macedonia and the Saz in Turkey .
