Šiaulių dviračių gamykla ( Šiaulių valstybinė dviračių ir vidaus degimo variklių gamykla "Vairas", Valstybinė įmonė "Šiaulių vairas" ) was a state-owned company from 1948 to 1998 in Šiauliai , the fourth largest city in Lithuania .
history
The company was founded in 1948 as the successor to the “Šiaulių vinis” factory. The first product ( bicycle for children) hit the market in 1951. One million of these bicycles had been produced by 1960. In 1990 the bicycles were exported to the USSR republics and 70 other countries.
It produced 266,100 moped motors, 59,500 “Kregždutė” bicycles (for girls), 381,000 “Ereliukas” bicycles for boys and 6,100 universal “Dubysa” bicycles. The turnover was 43 million rubles . In 1982 the company had 3,500 employees.
In 1993 a German-Lithuanian company UAB Baltik vairas was founded. It belongs to Panther International GmbH.
