Żegota Monument in Warsaw

The Żegota monument in Warsaw ( Polish: Pomnik Żegoty w Warszawie ) is a memorial to the Council for the Assistance of Jews ( Rada Pomocy Żydom ). It is located in a park on Ludwik Zamenhof Street in the Muranów district of Warsaw, between the Monument to the Heroes of the Ghetto and the Museum of the History of Polish Jews .

The monument, unveiled on September 27, 1995 by the then Polish Foreign Minister Władysław Bartoszewski , commemorates the activities and struggle of the Council for the Assistance of Jews, supported and financed by the Polish government in exile , in 1942 and 1945 during the Second World War . It was designed by the architect Hanna Szmalenberg and the artist Marek Moderau.

The inscription on the plaque of the monument is engraved in Hebrew, Polish and English. The Polish inscription reads (with German translation):

1942 - Żegota - 1945. Organizacja utworzona przez Polskie Państwo Podziemne dla ratowania Żydów w czasach Holocaustu, wśród jej podobnych działających w okupowanej Europie była jedzynąskie .

1942 - Żegota - 1945. The organization created by the Polish Underground State to Rescue Jews during the Holocaust was the only one of similar organizations operating in occupied Europe funded by its government, the Government of the Republic of Poland in Exile .

Next to the memorial is an oak tree that was planted in 1988 on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising to commemorate Poles and Jews.

The construction of the monument was financed by Polish US-Americans ("donated by American Friends of Zegota", see English label).
