Ștefăniță Lupu

Ștefăniță Lupu, also: Ștefan X. Lupu (* 1641 ; † 1661 ) was Prince of Moldova from December 1, 1659 to September 29, 1661 .

Life

It is thanks to his father, Prince Vasile Lupu , and his persistent insistence at the Sublime Porte that Lupu succeeded Grigore Ghica . His short reign, however, included devastating years in Moldovan history: Tatars and Turks invaded the country (the latter brought their own pretender to the throne), and there were also armed conflicts with the Wallachian prince Constantin Șerban Basarab . Shortly afterwards, the plague broke out, followed by a catastrophic famine.

Since the hungry even grated and ate reeds, the prince soon bore the nickname “Papură-Vodă (Prince Reeds)”. As a 20-year-old Ștefăniță was in Tighina (today's Bender ) and helped the Ottomans and Tatars build a defense system against the Cossacks. He fell ill and died in 1661.

Even today there is the phrase “parcă trăieşti în tara lui Papură-Vodă” (German: “as if you lived in the land of Prince Schilf”) in Romanian. What is meant is a state of complete anarchy and lawlessness, political chaos in which everything is possible.
