The Umra , in German Omrah ( Arabic عمرة, DMG ʿumra ), is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca . In contrast to the large pilgrimage , the Hajj , this small pilgrimage can be carried out at any time of the year. Especially in the fasting month of Ramadan, there is an increased tendency to ʿumra, as well as in the period before and after the Hajj.

The Umra is part of the Hajj rituals, but in contrast to the Hajj it can be repeated at any time in the year and therefore as often as desired. The umra is mandūb , i.e. a recommended act, the performance of which is rewarded, but the failure to do so is not punished.

procedure

First, like before the Hajj, the believer goes into the state of consecration , which in Arabic is called Ihram (إحرام) and its rules do not differ from those during Hajj. The first ritual act of the umrah is the tawaf , the seven times going around the Kaaba . This is followed by the Sa'i, the run between the Safa and Marwa hills, which is reminiscent of Hagar's search for water.

Since this ritual takes little time to complete, many non-Arab Muslims perform it before or after the actual Hajj. Just like the Hajj, the Umrah can also represent a z. B. The deceased can be carried out on condition that their own umrah has already been performed.

Types of umrah

  • Umrat al-tamattu - Hajj and Umrah performed one after the other.
  • Umrah Mufradah - only umrah is performed alone.
